Inspired by the Senbazuru Orikata by Shimokōbe Shūsui, one of the oldest documented books on origami dating back to 1797, our keycaps capture the essence of this timeless art form.
With the crane symbolizing peace, happiness, and good fortune, it is believed that folding 1,000 paper cranes grants the maker a wish for longevity and good health.
One of the most well-known stories associated with Senbazuru is that of Sadako Sasaki, a 12-year-old girl who developed leukemia after surviving the Hiroshima bombing. In the hospital, her father told her about the belief of cranes having a 1,000-year lifespan and that folding one crane for each year would grant a wish. Sadako folded over 1,300 cranes before her passing at only 12 years old, her hopeful and resilient spirit inspiring many. Friends, classmates, and family members raised money for a monument in her honor, as well as all of the sweet children who passed due to the bombing. Today, Sadako Sasaki and the art of Senbazuru stand as enduring symbols of peace and hope in Japanese culture.
Our Senbazuru Keycaps honor this legacy, from the Senbazuru Orikata colors, to the delicate origami artwork, to the F1-F12 keys showcasing some of the core crane-folding steps. We really enjoyed working on this one, and hope you love this beautiful set and the story of its inspiration as much as we do.
